out and about in london
today is a rainy day. the kind of day where you get abnormal urges to do 1000 piece puzzles. or make soup (which i have done).
my brain plays this cruel trick on me these days where on the weekend it doesnt care how hungover i am or how grey and cold it is outside, it is awake at 7:30-8:00 (am). on weekdays however, i'm generally taken against my will out of some crazy dream into the real world (then even worse, work) and spend the first few hours of the day disoriented and pissed off with rohan.
anyway, i was up this morning, hungover thanks to an evening out with pip, richard and co. in london and decided to get ingredients for my day of baking/cooking. dissapointingly, every man, woman and idiot child in east grinstead seemed to have the same idea (i thought the english were the church going kind?) and it was an all together unpleasant start to the day. so i have been hiding out here ever since. in addition to the soup, i have made sticky date pudding as we brought a bag of dates back from morocco to share with work people but i found them to be of suspect quality (so we had to keep them for ourselves ; )
so yeah, yesterday we were up in london. we went to a 'stop the war' rally. there were alot of passionate people there for various different causes as always. i dont really know what the answer to the outcome of the invasion of iraq is now, but i wanted to go and listen to the speakers to see if anyone had any good ideas. was a bit dissapointed really...
from there we continued the war theme and went to churchills museum in the WW2 war cabinet bunker. it was one of the best museum displays i have been to (and i have been to my fair share of museums). the way they have used multimedia is fantastic and gives you a real insight into the man and the country at the time of WW2. it was a strange day though going from protesting about the current 'war' to paying a fair bit of cash to view war memorabilia. i guess englands involvement in the second world war was less controversial.
anyway we caught up with pip and richard later for a great turkish fusion dinner in angel...and got the last train home by 2 minutes!
the weekend before we were again in londres...this time to celebrate the chinese new year. amy booked us a chinese banquet in china town which was delish. before that we caught the fireworks which were incredible as we were about 20m away from where they were being let off in leicester square (which is surrounded by buildings). it was soo loud and smoky i felt like we were under seige or something - except it made us all grin like idiots (maybe just me).
not much else going on. hopefully i will be finished with the olympics work in the next couple of weeks - not sure what is in store for me after, but i am definitely ready for something new.
rohan and i are going to do some touring around cornwall in a couple of weeks. i booked us into rick steins restaurant in padstow which i am very excited about.
i am reading a brilliant book - 'cloud atlas' at the moment. if you havent read it, you should.
we have also seen some good movies on these winter nights. we have joined an online video store because the range in EG is ok if you have 2 brain cells. the other day we were sent 'jarhead' and 'leon' so I told rohan we had been sent the wrong dvds but it turns out they were just ones rohan had picked (obviously nothing i would have dreamt of chosing! - but they were good all the same). also seen lars von trier's 'breaking the waves' harrowing and brilliant and 'eternal sunshine'...still very good the second time.
war time england? no, chinese new year
